COURSE OVERVIEW
The most widely used method for controlling pain during dental procedures is still the intraoral administration of local anesthetics. Registered dental hygienists (RDHs) have been administering injections for more than fifty years in the U.S. However, RDHs remain under-utilized, and this scope of practice continues to be controversial. The course will evaluate the landscape and changing methodology in the administration of pain management and relief by dental hygienists. Participants will discover the policy and politics that impact utilization, outcomes, and what methods are preferred. , what still holds popularity, and what changes are needed today and in the future.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
After completing this webinar, participants will be able to:
- Describe the landscape and forces that impact the administration of pain management by dental hygienists.
- Discuss common techniques and agents that are commonly utilized by dental hygienists.
- Describe the commonly occurring adverse events encountered during local anesthetic injection administration.
COURSE SPEAKER

Dr. Sean G. Boynes is a Dentist Anesthesiologist who received his D.M.D. from the University of Pittsburgh and completed a three year residency in anesthesiology from the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. He currently serves as Director of Interprofessional Practice at the DentaQuest Institute overseeing national programs and initiatives focused on the integration and coordination of care. Prior to taking his current position, Dr. Boynes was Director of Dental Medicine at a federally qualified health center in the Pee Dee Region of South Carolina. A prolific author and speaker, he has been recognized by many organizations for his work in health policy and clinical care, that include: the National Health Service Corps featured him as one of the 40 top clinicians for their 40th Anniversary Celebration, the South Carolina School Nurses Association named him recipient of the Distinguished School Services Award, and the National Children’s Oral Health Foundation lists him as a Dentist of Distinction.
