COURSE OVERVIEW
This course has been designed to assist the dental healthcare provider in gaining knowledge of categories of controlled substances as classified by the DEA based on the ATC (Anatomical/ Therapeutic/ Chemical) and USP (United States Pharmacopeia) classification.
The course will discuss best practice guidelines in making a clinical decision for appropriate categories of analgesics to prescribe for dental patients presenting with moderate to severe pain and who may require opioid, non-opioid or controlled substances for pain relief.
The course will discuss utilization of PDMP (Prescription Drug Monitoring Programs), describe potency of combination opioid preparations and safe combination dosages, and discuss the CDC’s role in creating the National Drug Code to establish MME (Morphine Mg Equivalent) conversion factors for safe prescribing of controlled substances and prevention of overdose related death.
The course will describe legal guidelines established by dental boards for counselling patients on proper storage and safe disposal of opioids, use of opioid alternatives and partial filling of prescriptions and elaborate on substances of abuse that a dental patient may be consuming while presenting for dental care.
The course will elaborate on alternative plans for patients suffering from opioid use disorder, describe behavioral characteristics of drug seeking patients, symptom manifestation and identification of patients with SUD/ OUDs and conclude with recommendations by CDC/ADA for best practice guidelines when prescribing controlled substances.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the conclusion of the course, the dental health care provider should be able to:
- Apply foundational concepts in management of dental pain in medically complex dental patients
- Discuss Opioid Use Disorder (OUD), misuse of opioids and opioid overdose deaths in the US
- Describe Substance Use Disorder (SUD) and discuss identification and management of SUDs
- Describe safe and competent use of opioids for managing acute, moderate & severe dental pain
- Discuss systemic complications and identify signs of chronic opioid use
- Identify and educate patients at high risk of OUD and opioid overdose
- Describe serious drug interactions of opioids with other controlled substances
- Discuss ADA/ CDC recommendations for managing acute and chronic dental pain
COURSE SPEAKER

Prof. Chand currently teaches pharmacology and therapeutics to dental, dental hygiene, and nursing students. He participates in clinical teaching and chairside therapeutics for dental students. He also teaches in the Nurse Anesthesia and Physician assistant programs at the University of Detroit Mercy's McNichols campus. Prof. Chand earned his M.D. in Medicine from the Christian Medical College and Hospital (India) where he specialized in Clinical Pharmacology. Prof. Chand is director of Infection Control and Safety is responsible for infection control policies and their implementation in accordance with CDC guidelines.
